My husband always wanted to got to The Stinking Rose, so I surprised him for his birthday. The glass of German wine I had was so great that I had to get another. My salmon was absolutely delicious and my friends ribs were fall-off-the-bone.

The mole was slightly bitter, almost like baking chocolate, and balances the sweetness of the ice cream, and the garlic’s zing. If you come to The Stinking Rose, give it a try. How often do you get a chance to eat garlic ice cream? Also sampled was the Chocolate Truffle Mousse Cake. The mousse cake was a heavy, thick mousse that sits at the bottom of your stomach. The mousse was presented in a cylindrical shape, dusted with coco powder.

Welcome to Rose & Shore

There is not a space in the entire restaurant not covered with art, murals, paintings, pictures, wine bottles, sculptures, etc. Throughout dinner, I stared at four garlic cloves that were painted in Warhol-esque fashion. For those who like to dine in quiet, understated surroundings, The Stinking Rose may be sensory overload.

A generous helping of the Garlic Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes (what did you expect?) flanked one side of the chop, with caramelized apples on the other. Sauced on top of the chop, and on the bottom of the entire plate, was a sweet Garlic relish. The chop itself was lightly seasoned and had gentle smokey undertones.

I’m not sure if garlic is addictive, but when I stared at the first item on the dessert menu, it didn’t seem so strange. I felt as if I needed a second opinion before diving headfirst into this venture. So I asked our server Agnes her thoughts, “People either love it or hate it. I love it, I think its great.” I felt strangely obligated to try it. The generous portion is served in a chilled blue ice cream dish/cocktail glass.

One has a giant mural of the “Creation of Adam” rendering on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. In this version of the famous painting, God is reaching out to Adam with a clove of garlic in his hand. The other room is my favorite themed area, Dracula’s Grotto. A tribute to the greatest of vampires, the room is made to look old and neglected, with cobwebs covering the ceiling. At the far end of the room is a picture of the Count, illuminated blood red, smiling brightly and showing his signature fangs.

With a formal dining room, a full bar/lounge, outdoor patio seating with communal tables, and a fully-restored barn for private dining and events, the vibe can feel both intimate or lively. A full (and free) gourmet breakfast each morning rounds out the pampered experience. Hotel guests can opt to skip the scene entirely thanks to 24/7 room service.

Since then, the service has slipped, the food has leaned too much on the garlic gimmick, and the overall experience (tired decor, noisy ambiance)left me disappointed. I won't be back, and won't recommend it except to confirmed garlic fanatics. Topping Rose has three room types scattered across the grounds, and each unit is equally stylish and contemporary with attention paid to luxe details. The House King features gray walls with white crown molding and wall paneling.

The food was fantastic and the ambiance was great because you were able to have privacy. I highly recommend this restaurant if you love garlic and you are going straight home afterwards. The entrees of Fresh Black Linguine & Clams and the Porterhouse Pork Chop came next. The linguine & clams was a superb presentation. A mound of jet-black pasta sat in the middle of a white pasta bowl, a visually engaging contrast.

Located near the heart of L.A.’s Westside, just south of the Beverly Center on busy La Cienega Blvd., The Stinking Rose is just a flat out fun dining experience. The outside is relatively benign; a white, one level building featuring several uncomplicated red and green marquees (of course, with a garlic clove). Upon entering the restaurant, I realized that they saved all the character for the inside.

As you will come to expect, the mural has been “garlicized,” and all the familiar L.A. We visit our son once a year and always put this place on our list of places to eat. After three visits we can honestly say that this has been one of our favorites. The staff go overboard to make your dining experience a WOW! We would highly recommend this garlic extrodinare restaurant. Feeling a little different (could have been from some kind of garlic infection), I ordered The Stinking Rose’s featured cocktail, the mojito, to accompany my meal. The classic mojito, heavy on the lime and muddled with plenty of mint, was a welcome change up to the usual dinner pairings of beer and wine.

Executive Chef and owner Andrea Froncillo has created a garlic lover’s paradise, featuring great food in a wildly fun, garlic-themed atmosphere. Fantastic for large parties, the restaurant boasts a varied menu with specialties including roasted crab, prime rib, pastas, and giant tureens of steamed clams, all bathed in garlic. Don’t forget to visit "Dracula’s Grotto," one of many ornately decorated rooms, and to try Gilroy’s Famous Garlic Ice Cream. A luxury haven in the heart of the Hamptons, this boutique beauty seamlessly blends together the old and the new. The hotel is a popular pick for Manhattan's well-heeled visitors and rooms sell out quickly.

I managed to score major brownie points with wifey by surprising her with a trip to The Stinking Rose. Her girl friends are jealous and their husbands are ticked at me because they didn't think of it first. This was my first time dining at The Stinking Rose. Being able to bring my own wine bottles and just being charged a corkage fee was great because I didn't need to spend $40 on one bottle of wine.

No surprise, the rest of the lounge is adorned with more garlic themed décor. Adjoining the lounge is a small outdoor patio, open for drinks and dining. I wouldn’t recommend the patio area for dining, as it sits on one of the busiest streets in Los Angeles, La Cienega Blvd. Yet another report on Friday showed inflation remaining stubbornly high. This time it was the measure of prices for March that the Federal Reserve prefers to use, but it wasn’t much worse than forecasts. Financial markets took it much more in stride than a report from the day before that suggested the same measure of inflation rose quickly from January through March.

If you’d like a more traditional approach to your drinking choices, there is a small wine list to choose from on the back of the dinner menu. Most are California wines, moderately priced, with the majority of selections below $50, and by-the-glass prices of $7 and $9. I loved this restaurant the first time there (3 years ago).

It was lightly covered with a caramel mole sauce that was the key to the whole, zany dish. Eaten naked, the ice cream has a much different character. The garlic is in your face and the ice cream is very sweet, attempting to balance out the garlic’s bite. When you add the caramel sauce, the dish significantly mellows.

The Garlic Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes were in a single word, RICH. Each bite was a spoonful of garlic, butter and potatoes . Although we did not order any, one of the featured items on the Stinking Rose menu is their Garlic Roasted Prime Rib.

As he relates the shield falling from off the wall, a hollow metallic reverberation can be heard throughout the house. At first, the narrator ignores the noises, but Roderick becomes increasingly hysterical. Roderick eventually declares that he has been hearing these sounds for days, and that they are being made by his sister, who was in fact alive when she was entombed. Fearing that her body will be exhumed for medical study, Roderick insists that she be entombed for two weeks in the family tomb located in the house before being permanently buried. The narrator helps Roderick put Madeline's body in the tomb, whereupon the narrator realizes that Madeline and Roderick are twins. The narrator also notes that Madeline's body has rosy cheeks, which sometimes happens after death.

By the utter simplicity, by the nakedness of his designs, he arrested and overawed attention. For me at least—in the circumstances then surrounding me—there arose out of the pure abstractions which the hypochondriac contrived to throw upon his canvas, an intensity of intolerable awe, no shadow of which felt I ever yet in the contemplation of the certainly glowing yet too concrete reveries of Fuseli. I learned, moreover, at intervals, and through broken and equivocal hints, another singular feature of his mental condition. It was thus that he spoke of the object of my visit, of his earnest desire to see me, and of the solace he expected me to afford him. He entered, at some length, into what he conceived to be the nature of his malady.

Usher has been reimagined as the head of a massive pharmaceutical company he runs with his twin sister, Madeline (Mary McDonnell). Every episode includes flashbacks to a young Roderick (Zach Gilford), Madeline (Willa Fitzgerald), and Annabel Lee (Katie Parker), Roderick’s first wife. These fill in how the Ushers made their fortune, but they’re kind of a narrative drag.

Breaking Down the Brutal Ending of The Fall of the House of Usher

In exchange for this protection, both Roderick and Madeline had to consent to the bargain that at the end of Roderick's life, just before he was fated to die anyway, his entire bloodline would die with him. Roderick and Madeline would also have to die at the same time, leaving this world the same way they came into it. The siblings agreed to the deal, left the bar, and soon after became convinced that the whole thing had been a shared delusion. Siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher have built a pharmaceutical company into an empire of wealth, privilege and power; however, secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty sta... The secret that is buried and then comes to light (represented by Madeline) is never revealed. The symbol which represents the secret – Madeline herself – is hidden away by Roderick, but that symbol returns, coming to light at the end of the story and (in good Gothic fashion) destroying the family for good.

One favourite volume was a small octavo edition of the Directorium Inquisitorum, by the Dominican Eymeric de Gironne; and there were passages in Pomponius Mela, about the old African Satyrs and Ægipans, over which Usher would sit dreaming for hours. His chief delight, however, was found in the perusal of an exceedingly rare and curious book in quarto Gothic—the manual of a forgotten church—the Vigilae Mortuorum secundum Chorum Ecclesiae Maguntinae. I well remember that suggestions arising from this ballad led us into a train of thought wherein there became manifest an opinion of Usher's which I mention not so much on account of its novelty, (for other men have thought thus,) as on account of the pertinacity with which he maintained it. This opinion, in its general form, was that of the sentience of all vegetable things. But, in his disordered fancy, the idea had assumed a more daring character, and trespassed, under certain conditions, upon the kingdom of inorganization. I lack words to express the full extent, or the earnest abandon of his persuasion.

But things aren't always as they seem; the final episode takes us inside everything that lingers, bringing everything full circle. Described by Frederick as “Gucci Caligula,” Perry is the youngest of the Usher children. Having only recently been thrust into the life of the ultra-rich, Perry’s goal is to make life one big party, and he’s hoping to use his family’s money to achieve just that.

It's the how and the why of their deaths that plays out over the course of Mike Flanagan's new horror anthology series, now streaming on Netflix. Might we then interpret Roderick as a symbol of the conscious mind – struggling to conceal some dark ‘secret’ and make himself presentable to his friend, the narrator – and Madeline as a symbol of the unconscious? Note how Madeline is barely seen for much of the story, and the second time she appears she is literally buried (repressed?) within the vault.

What did the very end of The Fall of the House of Usher mean?

Having deposited our mournful burden upon tressels within this region of horror, we partially turned aside the yet unscrewed lid of the coffin, and looked upon the face of the tenant. A striking similitude between the brother and sister now first arrested my attention; and Usher, divining, perhaps, my thoughts, murmured out some few words from which I learned that the deceased and himself had been twins, and that sympathies of a scarcely intelligible nature had always existed between them. Our glances, however, rested not long upon the dead—for we could not regard her unawed.

Poe draws heavily on Gothic conventions, using omens and portents, heavy storms, hidden passageways, and shadows to set the reader on edge. As Roderick nears the conclusion of his story, which jumps back and forth between his early years working at Fortunato and the events that led up to each of his children's deaths, he finally arrives at the fateful night that changed everything, New Year's Eve of 1979. ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ is an 1839 short story by Edgar Allan Poe ( ), a pioneer of the short story and a writer who arguably unleashed the full psychological potential of the Gothic horror genre.

As Roderick finishes his story, an eyeless and bloodied Madeline suddenly bursts out of the basement and attacks Roderick as the house begins to crumble around them. In a final burst of strength, Madeline strangles Roderick to death as Auggie flees collapsing home—a sequence that mirrors the ending of Poe's "House of Usher." The Martian Chronicles, a 1950 collection of stories by Ray Bradbury, contains a novella called "Usher II," a homage to Poe. Its main character, William Stendahl, builds a house based on the specifications from Poe's story to murder his enemies. In 1979, Italian state channel RAI loosely adapted the short story, together with other Poe's works, in the series I racconti fantastici di Edgar Allan Poe.[33] It was directed by Daniele D'Anza, with Roderick Usher played by Philippe Leroy; music was composed by pop band Pooh. During one sleepless night, the narrator reads aloud to Usher as eerie sounds are heard throughout the mansion.

More specifically, the property is situated in the suburbs of Alpharetta, Georgia (One of the Atlanta Area’s richest neighborhoods) in an exclusive guard-gated gold community. The fantastic design elements of the house make it seem as if it’s just jumped out of the covers of a popular interior magazine hotel. Not one to shy away from the conventionally accepted norms, Usher’s home features a foyer and master bedroom with black walls. Interestingly, designers now consider black to be all the rage because of it’s uniquely dark yet stylistic elements. The formal dining room is quite colorful with shades of deep purple, fine curtains, floral print wallpapers and valances. Usher also currently maintains a 10,823-square-foot mansion in Alpharetta, Georgia.

And so Roderick invited Madeline over to their childhood home, where their mother once died (and rose again, only to strangle a man to death before finally dying herself), to share a drink. This death comes as a major twist; throughout the conversation between Roderick and Dupin, he notes that he's not answering texts he's receiving from his granddaughter. As you may remember, Madeline's plan was to turn Fortunato into a tech company, and one of her major projects was A.I.

While the details are unclear, there is a pact between Madeline, Roderick, and Verna that seemingly involves death. Madeline attempts to alter the terms of their agreement, even resorting to violence, but Verna proves to be resilient. The situation leaves Madeline pondering the cryptic words of their contract, suggesting that death is an integral part of their deal.Meanwhile, Frederick, another Usher family member, manipulates the situation to position himself for the CEO position within Fortunato Pharmaceuticals. He subjects his wife, Morelle, to further torment and disfigurement, crossing the line even for Verna. In an unexpected turn of events, Verna ensures Frederick's demise by lacing his cocaine with a paralyzing drug.

Roderick Usher is a gifted poet and artist, whose talents the narrator praises before sharing a poem Usher wrote, titled ‘The Haunted Palace’. The ballad concerns a royal palace which was once filled with joy and song, until ‘evil things’ attacked the king’s palace and made it a desolate shadow of what it once was. The first two episodes of The Fall of the House of Usher premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2023 before the Netflix release the following month, being viewed more than 13 million times in its first two weeks. It was met with positive reviews, with critics praising its production values, directing, and performances (in particular from Gugino, Greenwood and Mark Hamill), although they were divided on its narrative, notably in relation to the source materials.

(Poe had one too.) Roderick has been haunted by all his awful children who have shuffled off this mortal coil, and it’s because it feels like the ghosts are finally coming for him that he is ready to confess. He’s having visions of monstrous ghosts, including the recurring specter of Verna (Carla Gugino), a figure that connects most of these tall tales as a sort of vengeful force of karma, the devil come to take what she’s due from a man who profited off the pain of others. In “The Fall of the House of Usher,” the setting, diction, and imagery combine to create an overall atmosphere of gloom. The story opens on a “dull, dark, and soundless day” in a “singularly dreary tract of country.” As the narrator notes, it is autumn, the time of year when life begins to give way to old age and death. A mere glimpse of the Usher mansion inspires in the narrator “an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart.” Upon entering the house, the reader as the narrator navigates through a series of dark passages lined with carvings, tapestries, and armorial trophies.

The disease which had thus entombed the lady in the maturity of youth, had left, as usual in all maladies of a strictly cataleptical character, the mockery of a faint blush upon the bosom and the face, and that suspiciously lingering smile upon the lip which is so terrible in death. We replaced and screwed down the lid, and, having secured the door of iron, made our way, with toil, into the scarcely less gloomy apartments of the upper portion of the house. A servant in waiting took my horse, and I entered the Gothic archway of the hall. A valet, of stealthy step, thence conducted me, in silence, through many dark and intricate passages in my progress to the studio of his master. Much that I encountered on the way contributed, I know not how, to heighten the vague sentiments of which I have already spoken. His countenance, I thought, wore a mingled expression of low cunning and perplexity.

She shapeshifts, and knows everything, always letting the Usher children know exactly what the universe needs them to know before their time is up. Even before the final episode of The Fall of the House of Usher, it's abundantly clear that Verna (Carla Gugino) is no mere human being. But Verna (which, if you notice, is an anagram of RAVEN) represents some kind of devil or adjacent otherworldly force, a harbinger of death who exists only to tempt and test the ethics and morality of those who need testing. As we approach the finale of The Fall of the House of Usher, after learning of Frederick's (Henry Thomas) grisly death in the penultimate episode, it would seem that we've finally caught up with the present, where Roderick sits, drinking expensive cognac and speaking with Dupin.

Whether the reader is trapped by the house or by its inhabitants is unclear. Poe uses the term house to describe both the physical structure and the family. On the one hand, the house itself appears to be actually sentient, just as Roderick claims. Its windows are described as “eye-like,” and its interior is compared to a living body.

Remarkably, the property is about four doors down from the celebrity and paparazzi favorite, Chateau Marmont hotel. ARTBOOK carries an extensive selection of magazines in a wide variety of subjects, as well as a large selection of children’s books, critical texts and performance titles. The bookstore also features a comprehensive collection of Hauser & Wirth artists’ titles and exhibition catalogues. The interior defies its exterior in that the interior is eccentric in many ways.

The overarching narrative of The Fall of the House of Usher loosely follows Poe's 1839 short story of the same name, with Roderick recounting his decades-spanning tale to Auggie inside his decrepit childhood home. Throughout the evening, Roderick is tortured by visions of his dead children—who appear to him as he relays the gruesome ways in which each of them met their end—while banging sounds that he says are coming from his twin sister, Fortunato COO Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell), can be heard emanating from the home's basement. In November 2023, Roderick Usher, the CEO of pharmaceutical company Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, loses all six of his children within two weeks. Auguste Dupin, an Assistant United States Attorney who dedicated his career to exposing Fortunato's corruption, to his childhood home, where he tells the true story of his family and unveils the Ushers' darkest secrets. The bedroom door is then blown open to reveal Madeline, bloodied from her arduous escape from the tomb.

After Roderick shows interest in Victorine’s revolutionary new heart technology — still in its testing phase — Victorine bends the rules of clinical trials to start testing on human subjects. Roderick Usher is the patriarch of the Usher family and CEO of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals. After acquiring Fortunato with the help of his twin sister, Madeline, the Usher family has found success and wealth at the cost of the greater good.

Within a few hours of the narrator’s arrival, Roderick begins to share some of his theories about his family. Much to the narrator’s surprise, Roderick claims that the Usher mansion is sentient and that it exercises some degree of control over its inhabitants. He declares that his illness is the product of “a constitutional and a family evil.” (The narrator later dismisses this as a cognitive symptom of Roderick’s “nervous affection.”) Roderick also reveals that Madeline, his twin sister and sole companion in the house, is gravely ill.

Throughout the tale and her varying states of consciousness, Madeline completely ignores the narrator's presence. After Roderick Usher claims that Madeline has died, the narrator helps Usher entomb Madeline in an underground vault despite noticing Madeline's flushed, lifelike appearance. It was, especially, upon retiring to bed late in the night of the seventh or eighth day after the placing of the lady Madeline within the don-jon, that I experienced the full power of such feelings. I struggled to reason off the nervousness which had dominion over me. I endeavoured to believe that much, if not all of what I felt, was due to the bewildering influence of the gloomy furniture of the room—of the dark and tattered draperies, which, tortured into motion by the breath of a rising tempest, swayed fitfully to and fro upon the walls, and rustled uneasily about the decorations of the bed.

Set Your Apartment Priorities

The loft in this home is reached by spiral stairs, which take up little floor space, though they can be tricky to navigate, especially by the very young and by older folk. This choice of stairs complements the contemporary style of the home (Photo by Noah Benjamin on Unsplash). If you prefer to have your bed accessible throughout the day, it’s still helpful to make it seem like a “separate” space. It can be very easy to overwhelm a space with large furniture, so remember not to crowd it. Choose smaller pieces that don’t take up all of the available floor space, and only include essential furniture pieces that you know will get used. When tackling loft space design it’s best to keep the principles of minimalism in mind with every choice you make.

Living in a Single Room: 25 Unique Loft Designs

If you’re looking for lower rent prices and less competition, trends show that the best time to move is in December or January. If you prefer to browse a larger selection of loft apartments and don't mind competing with other prospects, then start your search in spring or summer. When you live in a loft apartment, communal space for desirable amenities is often nonexistent. It’s usually challenging to build out fitness rooms, club rooms, storage areas, and roof decks in a building where every floor would need to be converted and repurposed. Despite their spaciousness, lofts don’t always offer traditional storage like closets. You might need to supply your own wardrobes, trunks, or chests of drawers to create the storage you need.

Loft Features

This could be an exposed brick wall, wooden beams across the ceiling, or non-traditional flooring (concrete, anyone?). All of these elements really lend themselves to exciting design opportunities. Due to their small size, one of the best design tips for a loft space is to use mirrors. It’s never a good idea to cover a home floor to ceiling and wall to wall in glass, but by adding one mirror accent wall to this area, you can seemingly double its perceived size.

If your loft is close to the street, you might end up feeling like you’re living in a fishbowl. If you live with a roommate, you’ll need to get creative to build out separate rooms. But even if you live alone in a loft, it’s tough to host guests when there are few interior walls. It’s also difficult to work from home with a business partner or clients when you live in an open room. Los Angeles’s big lofts are more than just spacious living spaces—they’re a testament to the city’s capacity for reinvention and innovation. Their eclectic mix of historic charm and modern luxury make them more than just residences—they are a lifestyle statement.

If you run a business that houses inventory or greets clients, your loft can also accommodate your needs for space and multi-use functionality. Big live/work lofts in Los Angeles are renowned for their spaciousness, with the average loft in downtown L.A. Some even exceed 3,000 sq ft, offering residents a veritable playground of space and creativity. Among these, the Singer Building holds a revered status, offering some of the biggest luxury lofts in Downtown Los Angeles (DTLA).

You'll be close to hiking, and the neighborhood parks are bigger (easier to own a dog here, for sure). Perhaps your sitting area is a dark gray, but the bedroom area is a stark white. Let’s take your loft’s style game up a notch with an awe-inspiring gallery wall. Imagine a stunning display of your favorite artwork, photographs, and memorabilia, thoughtfully curated to express your unique personality and interests. Imagine the refreshing breeze gently caressing your face as you kick back and relax in your well-ventilated sanctuary. These sturdy beams serve as a reminder of nature’s timeless beauty while also allowing you to customize your loft with a masculine edge.

With your workspace floating above, you’ll feel like a modern-day visionary, ready to conquer any challenge that comes your way. Whether you’re hosting friends or simply relaxing in style, this open floor-plan loft will elevate your perspective in every sense of the word. Use our filters to set your priorities, whether that’s neighborhood preference or budget. We’ll give you a list of results that match your criteria, along with photos and comprehensive listings. You can brainstorm some improvements to make a loft more energy efficient.

Spend some time during the day and return in the evening to discover the vibe, safety, and neighborhood hot spots. If possible, show up during rush hour to see what your commute might look like. Older industrial buildings-turned-lofts ooze rustic charm, but that might also mean they come with outdated utilities. Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do about old pipes and outdated ventilation.

Uncover the strategic use of minimalist partitioning, enabling privacy without compromising the loft’s inherent spaciousness. These are perfect to use to design a loft space because space is limited, so you want the design to keep as much floor space as possible. Building a “full length” wall can often make lofts feel boxed-in and even smaller than they already are, but a “hip height” wall offers a better solution. These walls not only help break up a larger space to give it more purpose but can also serve a second function as storage solutions. Utilize multifunctional furniture, such as storage beds and foldable tables.
